This is me with makeup on ~ a rare sight since my first was born nearly 4 years ago. But now I have natural makeup that I feel good about wearing, and I end up spending the minute and a half it takes to apply most days of the week.
Comparing me with vs without makeup you might not notice much of a difference (below is without- with my cute little guy!) but we do. The day I got my natural makeup in the mail, I tried it on right away and hubby walked in after work saying, “Wooooo, you look good!” – he noticed right away. Pretty impressive for this guy!
I felt like makeup wasn’t something I was interested in spending time on for quite a while, and thus didn’t wear it other than some mascara and colored lip gloss occasionally. I knew that I never wanted to have wearing makeup be a requirement for me to be seen in public or photographed- I wanted to make sure I was comfortable with how I looked naturally and didn’t want to have makeup be an unhealthy priority for me, displacing what really is important, even just for a few minutes.
As I’m working to trade out conventional items for healthier alternatives, I looked into organic makeup and I ended up ordering Miessence ® make up from independent rep Joanna, owner of Actual Organics™. It isn’t cheap, but it’s healthy and that makes you feel so much better about wearing it.
It really only does take me a minute and a half to put on, and it makes me feel pretty all day, even if I’m just going to the grocery store or to the park with the kids. I have always known that I wanted to avoid becoming a ragged looking stay-at-home mom who stays in sweats all day (though all bets are off when I have a newborn), and spending a bit of time to put on makeup seems to extend out into how I care for my looks, and other areas as well. I figure if I spent a minute putting makeup on, I can spend another minute cleaning out the car, making the bed (I’m awful at doing that usually), and setting the shoes all in a row rather than letting them gather in a pile by the front door. I’m not saying that buying this makeup will give you a clean house… I’m just noticing how putting a little effort into my appearance seems to start a good momentum for the day
I’m a wannabe minimalist, though I’ve succeeded in always keeping my makeup confined to this little makeup bag that I bought in high school. Here’s what I have:
From Minescence (buy here):
Foundation in Honey
Mascara
Plum lip color with a brush
A cute little sampler of perfume- I don’t remember what kind but I love it
Rose of Sharon Acres Lip Balm
And Burt’s Bees
Face powder that I don’t use because it makes me look silly. I don’t know why I keep it
Colored lip gloss
Do you wear makeup? How often? What kind?
Small print: Miessence ® is brought to you by independent Miessence rep and owner of Actual Organics™

I wear a little makeup…mascara from Jane Iredale and burt’s bees lip gloss for every day. Then sometimes eye liner from Honeybee Gardens, powder (or foundation powder?) lipstick, and eye shadow from a Jane Iredale sample kit, nail polish from Honeybee Gardens.
I get the Jane Iredale stuff from dermstore, and the Honeybee Gardens from their website.
I also like this tinted lipbalm (alba botanica in bloom): http://www.iherb.com/Alba-Botanica-Bloom-TerraTints-SPF-8-15-oz-4-2-g/4527?at=0
I use Bare Minerals foundation which is all natural, from the earth. If you do it right it looks great. ButI really like the sound of the foundation you have picked. That will go on my wish list. And it all lasts a really long time, so it is worth it for sure.
Having huge pores and acne scars, makeup is a daily requirement for me. I so wish it weren’t this way, but I am very self-conscience about my skin and don’t go out w/o makeup. I will have take take a look at Actual Organics.
Everyday minerals and Aromaleigh are both fairly affordable, natural mineral makeups. Aromaleigh does carry some none mineral stuff too but I just stick to what I feel safe with. Ive also found a lot of small businesses on Etsy that make their own products. So far these options have been the most affordable. Jane Iredale and Bare Minerals were just too outrageously priced for me to be okay with buying. I do also avoid Bare Minerals now because of the bismuth in their powder. Cant say Id be allergic to it but its a risk I can easily avoid, so I do. Id say most brands are just trial and error. Theres plenty of natural brands out there now (and a million more that are greenwashing you) so just do the research and sample if you can (Aromaleigh has generous sampling). I too try not to focus on makeup, but it does give me a boost of confidence and motivation so I find the few minutes to be worth it!
I am a teacher and during my summers off I don’t usually wear makeup. No sense in wearing makeup while you sweat in the garden! I do wear it to work during the school year…I was barely 22 when I started teaching and looked younger than some of my students without it. Now I wear it to help me feel and look pulled together when I’m in the classroom. I’m glad to see some natural makeup recommendations; I plan to start trying some.
Cara, I don’t wear any cosmetics any longer.
However, I should become more knowledgeable of how to make my skin look healthier from the inside out. I tend to have dry skin even when using a few natural things for exfoliation( oatmeal and corn meal) and hydration (coconut oil). I have girl-like features but my skin is weathering! I’d love to read some articles about the vit e’s and other nutrients that we can get from our diets to nurture a youthful appearance.
After I get that right -someday… I would love to explore a few natural cosmetics particularly foundations.
I’ll keep this one you reviewed on file, for sure.
I can’t say enough good things about Everyday Minerals. The two biggest qualities are A) price $12.00 for the foundation and it lasts me well over 6 months. B) only 4 ingredients, all of which are too big to be absorbed by the skin.
Highly recommend it. You can also go on the website and order the small trial sizes for free, so that you can find the right color combo for your skin. All you end up paying is $2.80 for shipping. This small trial size lasted me 3 months and 12 days!
Jacinda, have you ever I would suggest a mixture of Jojoba and Grapeseed oil for your dry skin. Just a tiny bit, because too much oil can actually make your skin drier. Add oil of Bergamot and Geranium if you’re into aromatherapy, they both help balance the sebum production and heal the skin.
I need to learn more about the different properties of different oils, thanks for sharing!
I wear makeup everyday but I really want to switch to a healthier and safer brand. Thank you for sharing! You’re very pretty with or without makeup.
I wear make up when I go out for dinner or when I’m having a drag of a day. Putting on a nice dress, make-up and doing my hair just makes me feel better, so I get more done.
I DO need to get some more natural make up, though. I just have the cheap stuff full of chemicals. But I’d like to get some mascara and cover-up (since that’s what I wear most of the time) that I know won’t kill me
I wear either Bare Minerals or Jane Iredale…but I don’t like Bare Minerals lipsticks for the most part – still a bit too many chemicals in them. A really good natural brand of lipsticks I found is Ecco Bella Flowercolors very beautiful, last long, and totally natural !
You can check the safety of your personal care products at this website. I also use Jane Iredale – the products are rated with a green light. http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/
